Nan Hua Buddhist Temple

Nan Hua Buddhist Temple

It looks like this building fell from Taiwan and accidentally landed in Bronkhorstspruit. This enormous Buddhist temple has been part of the landscape since 1992 and is the largest Buddhist temple and seminary in Africa

The local monks quietly stroll up and down the corridors. You might even be able to catch them in a moment of self-reflection as they meditate in one of the temple’s many sacred halls.

As a visitor, you may enter the Pu Hsien Shrine, leaving your shoes at the door of course. Inside you are given the opportunity to light an incense stick whilst you offer a silent prayer to the Buddhist deity “Samantabhadra”. The room is filled with a spiritual aura as others quietly go about their prayers.

After spending the morning in awe of the temple’s beauty, you can join the monks in their dining hall for a Sunday lunch, monk style. An assortment of more than 10 different vegetarian dishes are served, offering a sneak peek into the flavours of the Buddhist world.
